Athens, Tennessee is a small town located in McNairy County, Tennessee. The population was 2,748 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. As early as 1802, Athens was known as the "City of tents." The first permanent settler in what would become McNairy County was James Robertson who purchased land east of present-day Athens on December 8th, 1802. From this location he began to build a Log Cabin colony which eventually became known as Athens. The town's first school opened in September of 1806 and operated for one year before being closed due to lack of funds. In 1810, the General Assembly passed an act authorizing the erection of a brick school house and frame building on lot #2 opposite Government House (later known as McMillan Park). The building still stands today and has been used by several schools over the years including Athena High School and now Concordia University’s McLarty Campus School. It was not until 1830 that Athens had its own courthouse which served both local residents and those from surrounding counties until it was replaced by the current structure in 1865. Until then, all court proceedings were conducted out of Government House until finally moving to new quarters in 1830 whenANDERSON COUNTY BECAME A PART OF MCDONALD COUNTY AND THE COURTS MOVED TO AThens AGAIN AFTER THAT YEAR's DISTRICT REVISION! In 1875, after years of discussion between various parties involved with getting control over what would become McNairy Countyline Highway 1 through central Athens (then called State Route 9), an agreement was reached whereby ownership over shoulders along SR 9 would be transferred from Davidson County to McNairy County for development purposes should it ever be decided that highway construction might occur through our town limits! After much reconstruction following World War II efforts such as work done on ramps leading into downtown from I-24N/I-24W & US 31E/US 31W (& later also I-65) & numerous other projects throughout the county line - most notably Hurricane Floyd damage done to MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AREA OF ATHSHEEP - things have gradually begun to stabilized within recent decades although there are still many challenges faced by citizens & officials alike every day!! In recent years we have seen major progress made towards revitalization including plans for multiple highrise buildings overlooking Main Street; addition of more retail spaces; relocation or demolition of several businesses currently occupying vacated storefronts; redevelopment or replacement (of existing) homes within city limits; installation of LED lights throughout downtown core; addition (in 2018) Of A New Library!!!

After Custer's defeat at Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, many people in Athens began moving away from the town to find new opportunities. However, some remain in Athens today as residents or visitors.
