The first Europeans to visit Athens, Tennessee were the Spanish in 1802. The area that includes Athens and parts of what is now McMinnville was part of the Creek Nation before Indian Removal in 1813. The town of Athens was founded by James Robertson in 1824. In 1847, the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad was built through Athens, cutting off trade with the Cherokee Nation. As a result, Athens became an agricultural center with corn, cotton, and other crops grown between miles of rolling hills. In 1865, Union General John C. Fremont fought his way through Georgia and Tennessee to march on Corinth from here. When he reached Athens he found it abandoned because its people had all died from dehydration during the march. Aftermath of the Civil War resulted in Reconstruction which led to growth in both local businesses and industry as white farmers moved into new areas around town while African Americans continued to work rural plantations.
