Troup's fortification prevented Confederate forces from reaching Knoxville or Chattanooga before they were driven back northward by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant in April 1862. Following the war, Athens became an important commercial center with flour mills and tobacco warehouses dotting Prospect Avenue and Second Street northeast of downtown. With its growing population came increasing development around Court House Square with brick homes going up along Second Street between Prospect Avenue and Vinegar Alley; this period is also known as "the Georgian period." In 1881 construction began on what would becomeknown as First Baptist Church east of Court House Square which served as both church and community center for residents until 1951 when it was replaced by First Presbyterian Church across Vinegar Alley from Courthouse Square which still serves today as the main congregation for Athens' largest Protestant denomination During Prohibition Period (1920-1933), beer was brewed at various locations including one on Third Street south of courthouse square where it remained commercially produced until about 1933 when prohibition ended . After prohibition ended there continued some production but overall alcohol demand decreased leading to many businesses closing down including most breweries within five years followed by stores selling liquor licenses instead Alcoholic Beverages Tax Act (ABT) led many small businesses like these chain store conversions providing much needed employment during hard times while large restaurants closedtered their menus making Athenians compete indirectly economically against neighboring cities such as Memphis or Nashville
