In the early 1800s, Athens, Tennessee was a thriving town with a population of around 1,000. With its location on the banks of the Ohio River and its proximity to Kentucky and Kentucky coal mines, Athens became known as one of America's "mighty cities." The population of Athens increased rapidly during the 1850s due to the influx of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1860, there were over 1,000 residents in Athens. After Union forces burned down several homes and businesses in Athens on November 11, 1861 during the Civil War, the population decreased to about 100 people by 1865. However, because of its strategic location near Corinth and other military installations, Athens continued to be a major center for trade and commerce during Reconstruction period until 1892 when it lost its status as an incorporated municipality. In 1916-1917, Athens built a new high school which replaced one that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. In 1930-1931,[1] Athenians constructed a new courthouse which served as the municipal building until 1978 when it was replaced by a new courthouse which is still used today.[2] During World War II,[3] many local businesses took part in providing materials for the war effort including producing munitions;[4] also many individuals donated their time or resources to help with food production;[5] most notably James Sanger who provided employment for locals while he developed his atomic bomb project at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard;[6] among others local citizens such as Mrs. Bea Fenton made donations towards construction costs for various civic buildings such as library (1893), cemetery (1920), park (1927), water tower (1929), gas station (1935) and fire hall (1978).

In the 1840s, the town started to grow rapidly due to its strategic location on the Cumberland River. By 1850, Athens had become a major city with over 10,000 residents.
