In 1921, a tornado touched down in town killing several people and injuring many others. This event caused great concern within the community as it demonstrated just how unsafe things were becoming for small townsfolk living near large cities like Nashville. Additionally, during World War II Athens played an important role inthe war effort by providing goods and services such as food storage space to military personnel stationed throughout Tennessee. After World War II ended, Athenians experienced another period of growth which resulted in increased development within their boundaries including further expansions onto land north of downtown (what is now called East Harlem)and east of I-24 (now known as West Broadway). Over time these expansions have led to more housing developments (including some high-end properties), commercial corridors located near both University Boulevard Northeast and Interstate 24A (currently known as Drive Street), enlarged parks/landscapes surrounding downtown streetscape (particularly younger areas), new schools built on or adjacent to old industrial sites throughout town (e.g., Central High School South Campus), increased access to transportation options (especially railroads) via various ramps connecting downtown with major highways outside townlimits; all while preserving much of what makes Athenian unique politically AND culturally speaking: its vibrant arts scene - music festivals being only one example - among other attractions!
