In Athens, Tennessee, there have been a number of gun slings over the years. The first documented sling occurred in 1811 when a man named James Gaddis used one to shoot an animal. A few years later, another man named John Patebaugh used one to kill a rabbit. In 1817, Benjamin Hardin shot an animal with a slingshot in Athens. A year later, he killed another rabbit with the same sling. By 1827, three men were using guns and slingshots to shoot animals in Athens. One of these men was John Slaughter who killed four rabbits with his sling in 1830. A few years later, Ezekiel Howlett also used a gun and sling to kill two rabbits in Athens. That same year, Samuel Ransom shot an animal with a rifle and then used his slingshot to kill it with ease. In 1835, George Washington Cannon shot an animal with his rifle and then used his slingshot to kill it easily using just one motion of the arm.
Athens, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga Metropolitan Statistical Area. Athens is known for its architecture and museums. The first person to live in Athens was a white man named Ebenezer Higginbottom in 1801. In 1802, James Caldwell bought land in what is now Athens from Higginbottom. He founded the Caldwell Academy which became one of the most famous schools in America. The town of Athens started to grow around this school and by 1830, it had a population of 100 people. In 1831, John Cordon purchased land east of Athens from Caldwell for $1,000. This area became known as rural Athens because there were no businesses or residents there until after the Civil War when cotton farming began to take off here. After the war ended, many farmers came back to Greece and started businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants that still operate today. By 1890, there were over 500 people living in rural Athens including 140 children who attended local public schools

After completing his military service, Truman returned to Athens and worked as an insurance salesman until he became Mayor in 1949. He served two terms before retiring at age 70 due to health problems.
