The Gun Security Museum was started by Dick Sauer in 1974 as a way of educating citizens about how to protect themselves from crime with handguns. That same year, he opened the Gun Security Library which is now home to over 200 Firearms Collection items from around the world. Athens, Tennessee is a small town in the mountainous region of Hardin County, Tennessee with a population of just over 4,000 people. The town was founded in 1872 by Methodist missionaries and has been occupied by humans since the time of the dinosaurs. Athens is located on the banks of the Little River and is home to several businesses including a post office, cotton gin, lumberyard and agricultural center. The community is also known for its annual peach Festival which takes place in late May or early June. The festival features local artists painting Peach Pies while music plays from local bands. The name Athens comes from two German words: ATHENS und OTTAWA (Athanasia and Ottawa). The missionaries who founded Athens were looking for locations that would be near each other so they could preach to more people at once. They found an area next to a creek called "Hannibal" which meant "humble country." They named their new town after General David Hunter who had led American forces in the Mexican-American War. General Hunter had also served as president of Nashville University and helped found Vanderbilt University. In 1976, Athens became part of the newly formed United States of America and has seen many changesover the years. In 1984, there was a fire that destroyed most of the buildings in downtown Athens but it left behind an amazing collection of architecture including Gothic Revival style churches such as First Baptist Church and Second Presbyterian Church; Cochran School; Ohatchee Baptist Church; Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church; Gadsden Presbyterian Church; Hawkins Bank building; Tennessean building; Coca Cola plant (now Kroger) - all built between 1884-1964! Today, most of these buildings are used as museums or historical sites but one still remains: First Baptist Church which stands today as one of only two Greek Revival styled churches remaining in Tennessee!

The regulation of handguns saw a number of new and improved designs Introduced including magazines that held more rounds than earlier pistols, as well as safety features such as triggers that could be pulled back to fire while still in your hand (the modern “smart” handgun). The Second World War saw an increase in gun violence due to military engagements and wartime shortages of weapons. In 1946, the Gun Control Act was passed which aimed to reduce gun crime by increasing registration requirements for guns, banning certain types of rifles and shotguns, limiting ammunition availability, making it more difficult for criminals to buy firearms, and providing financial compensation to victims of firearm crimes. Despite these efforts, gun violence continued to increase during the postwar period until 1949 when Congress passed the Gun Control Amendments which banned all lead ammunition (which was then being used extensively in shootings), amended background checks on all firearm sales nationwide, created a licensing system for dealers who soldguns (now known as “gun dealers”), and increased funding for law enforcement agencies tasked with reducing gun crime. The post-war period also saw advances in technology which made it easier for criminals to purchase firearms online or through underground channels such as straw buying – where someone will pretend they are purchasing a weapon from a legitimate dealer but actually obtaining it from an unlicensed source. This trend continued into the early 21st century with various technological advancements such as fingerprinting systems and facial recognition software becoming available that make it easier for police officers to identify potential perpetrators with relative ease. Despite these advances however there has been no significant decrease in gun violence throughout this time frame

The founding of Athens in 1795 by General James Wilkinson and Colonel John Sevier led to its rapid growth as a commercial and cultural center. In 1898, Athens became the capital of Tennessee after being selected by the U.S. Congress as the new state’s seat following a referendum process. The city experienced significant growth in subsequent decades, becoming one of the most populous in Tennessee and home to some of the largest businesses in the state. Today, Athens is an important cultural and economic center within Greater Nashville, serving as a hub for education, business, healthcare, professional services, and other industries. The history of Athens begins with two pioneers who decided to settle what is now downtown Athens on land that was then known as “Milton Plantation” on November 18th, 1795. General James Wilkinson had come west from Kentucky with his regiment during the American Revolution and had been appointed commander-in-chief at Fort Pitt in Pennsylvania when he learned about the potential for settlement in what is now central Tennessee. He organized a party of men under his command and set out for what would become known as “the New Deal Settlement” which consisted of twenty-one tracts totaling 640 acres (240 hectares). Wilkinson named his new community “Athens” after ancient Greek cities such as Mycenaean Pylos (now Piraeus) and Thebes (now Erbil), both located near present day Corinth, Greece. In 1898, following passage through Congress by vote over objections from Arkadelphia (then Memphis) – thenserving as Tennessees second congressional district – Athens became Tennessees capital due to popular demand following reports that Atlanta was becoming too POLITICAL GONE BROWN for Tennesseeans! Since there were no other major cities or towns in central Tennessee at that time*, it served as an important economic center for northcentral TN until Memphis developed into an even more important political/economic center following World War II…. *This claim may be spurious since there are no records documenting any population growth or changes at this time withincentralTennessee
On July 17, 1861, Athens was organized as the first city in Tennessee to secede from the United States. The city's secession Manifesto declared that "the people of Athens desire nothing more than to be their own masters and protect their rights." On August 12, 1861, a group of Confederate soldiers attacked a town meeting in Athens, wounding five people before withdrawing. The violence continued as Confederate forces burned down buildings and looted stores in the city. In response, Mayor John Hargrave called for an all-out civil war to preserve Athens' independence. When no help could be found from either side, Hargrave resigned on October 5. A year later, on January 6 1862, General Nathan Bedford Forrest arrived in Athens with 1,500 men to lead a military campaign against the Unionists. Forrest raided homes and businesses throughout the city and burned several churches before advancing into downtown Athenians celebrated his arrival by making whiskey cocktails. A week later, on January 14th Brigade Major James Wylie surrendered Corinth to General Forrest at Folsom Prison after leading a night attack that freed nearly 100 Union prisoners who had been held there since December 1st.
