During World War II, Athens became one of four cities located along the Tennessean coastline that produced military supplies for Japan. The city also played a significant role in establishing air defense around Nashville during that time period. After World War II ended, Athens experienced a rapid growth as K-9 units became popular with law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Tennessee because they could scanprint pictures or fingerprints without leaving their precincts. As a result of this success, K-9 units were transferred to Athens in 1965 and remain here today as part of local law enforcement strategy
