By 1800, muzzle loading firearms had become common on American soil and began to be imported into England. An earlynn cartridge – called "Navy musket cartridges" – was patented on January 26th 1827 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte with a design for a cartridge that would use Minié bullets instead of rifle shot to reduce overpressure within the gun barrel during firing. In 1836 Samuel Colt produced his first revolver using this new type of cartridge. In 1853, Nikolai Fedorov developed an improved version of ballistics theory which led to the development of projectiles that could travel as far as 3 miles per second (4 kilometers per second). This new technology allowed guns such as cannons and rifles to fire faster than ever before and eventually led to decisive victories against French forces at Waterloo and Gettysburg. In 1861, John Browning introduced his .50 calibre rifle which became known as the “Father Of Modern Riflery” because it enabled armies around the world to achieve victory through artillery bombardment rather than infantry warfare. With machineguns becoming more commonplace in World War I, magazines became an important factor in battlefield success; many troops were able to bring along multiple rounds of ammunition with them on campaign or when retreating from battle. By 1939 machineguns alone accounted for 60% of all artillery fire across all theatres during World War II!
