A Brief History of Athens, Tennessee As the largest city in East Tennessee, Athens played an important role in the state's history. In 1800, it was named the capital of Transylvania County and served as such until 1821 when Nashville became the official capital. The city experienced a period of growth during the late 19th century with its population reaching over 100,000 people. However, by 1910, Athens had shrunk to its current size due to economic reasons. The city experienced another period of growth from the 1960s through the 1990s which resulted in a population of over 200,000 people today. The first inhabitants of what is now Athens were Native American brothers and sisters who lived on a reservation near present-day Greeneville. They were eventually forced out by white settlers and moved to what is now downtown Athens in 1802. After arrival, they founded a small town called Clinton that gradually grew into a larger community with around 100 residents by 1830. In 1835, the Cherokee nation ceded their land adjacent to present-day Athens to Georgia for development into plantations; however, this did not impact Athenians’ economy as they continued to grow tobacco and other crops on their own lands. By 1850, there were over 1,500 residents living in what is now downtown Athens with nearly two-thirds being African Americans working on cotton plantations throughout much of the 20th century. During Reconstruction (1868-1927), Athens was one of several cities across East Tennessee ravaged by race riots that followed after efforts by Confederate General Robert Ewell to keep blacks off white soil while maintaining his power base within South Carolina following federal troops’ occupation of that state during the Civil War. Many African American men died or were injured during these riots as well as dozens more whites who lost their lives or homes due to violence ensuing from Stephens’ order “all black men must leave public property within six miles thereofuntil ordered otherwise” thereby disenfranchising most blacks in eastern Tennessee at that time.
