Athens, Tennessee is a small town located in McMinn County, Tennessee. The population of Athens was 5,701 at the 2010 census. It is the third-most populous municipality in McMinn County. Athens was founded as a station on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad in 1881. The first post office was established in Athens on July 1, 1881. In 1896, Athens became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,000. In 1957, Athens became part of the Memphis metropolitan area and lost its status as a city. After years of economic decline, downtown Athens experienced a revival starting in the mid-2000s which has led to new development along State Street and Vine Street near the University of Memphis campus.
The history of Athens, Tennessee begins with the arrival of Europeans in the area in the early 1800s. The first European to live in what is now Athens was José de la Cueva, who came overland from Madrid in 1802. He founded a small town on the edge of present-day Athens and named it Santiago de Cuba. Spanish settlers arrived until 1810 when they were replaced by American settlers. The first white settler in Athens was Pierre Taylor, who arrived in 1815. In 1830, John Cockerill bought land east of downtown Athens from General Donelson for $2,000. He began construction on what would become known as Cockerill's Mill which operated until 1870. In 1840, Hawkins tract was sold to Jno. Ladd for $1,000 and became part of Athens permanently. By 1850, there were more than 100 people living in Athens and it had a school and a post office. A courthouse was built near what is now Harrison Avenue between 1851 and 1861; it served as the city's temporary government until permanent government buildings were erected at Third and M Streets later that year. After becoming an incorporated municipality under state law on July 1, 1865 (following approval by the General Assembly), Athens made rapid growth thanks to its annexation into Chattanooga on January 1, 1867 (the first municipality annexed into Chattanooga). During Reconstruction times (1868-1912), many African Americans worked as farmhands or blacksmiths in search of opportunity during this time period throughout much of America's South after being stripped of their property following emancipation through violence or laws passed by Congress during that era known as "Lynching Laws." Many African Americans also worked as mechanics or laborers at local businesses such as Cockerill's Mill due to lack of available replacement labor during this time period across much of America's South because machines had not yet been invented which made farming difficult back then. After the end of Reconstruction times (1912-1917), many African Americans moved into positions within newly formed white society including jobs such as teachers/administrators/lawyers etc., however most continued working outside white society due to racism stillexisting today especially towards African Americans despite progress made since then throughout America’s South overall concerning race relations generally speaking although some progress has been made recently regarding civil rights issues specifically involving African Americans living within certain neighborhoods within cities like Atlanta etc...
