In 164 BC he became an general in Rome's army and invaded Greece; but when news reached Athens that he had defeated Rome at Penai on October 25th, 163 BC, many people refused to believe it could be true. Consequently, Alexanders forces were unable to quash a serious revolt led by two leading citizen generals called Pamphylus and Thrasybulus; these rebels managed to take control of much of Greater Athens before being suppressed by Alexanders forces on November 3rd (the day following his victory at Penai). The humiliated Alexander III abdicated in favour of his young daughter Olympias (though this did not mean that Greece would become an empire ruled by women). Aftermath: After Alexander's defeat at Penai many Greeks refused to believe what they had seen on television so they formed mobs which burned down city gates even though there were no real clashes taking place between him & Rome
