Ammunition history in Athens, Tennessee began in the early 1800s when man first started using firearms to hunt game. Firearm manufacturers were established soon after and manufacturing of ammunition continued until the late 1800s. Ammunition production was centered around two main types of projectiles: shot and shell. Shot was made from a type of coal called black powder and it was used for muzzle loading guns and rifle sights. Shell, also called shot or cannonball, was made from a type of copper-based alloy and it was used for artillery bombardments and warships’ cannons. In 1811, a group of entrepreneurs founded the Athens Arms Manufacturing Company which became one of the leading gunmakers in America during the 19th century. The company produced rifles, shotguns, cannons and other firearm products until 1954. During that time period, Athens Arms Manufacturing Company manufactured over 1 million rounds of ammunition.

The Trimbles also operated a munitions factory in their business on Elm Street for many years until it closed in 1930s due to World War II requirements for aluminum production. In 1955-1956, Dixie Ammunition Company was established at 3337 East Broad Street by Ewing Fenton and David Pratt with a goal of making good quality ammunition available at reasonable prices for Law Enforcement Officers and Military personnel around the United States. This company continued operations into the late 1990s when it merged with another ammo distributor, Midwest Armoury Inc., forming Mid-South Ammunition Corporation which eventually went bankrupt in 2003 due to overspending on inventory caused by Hurricane Ivan
Athens, Tennessee is a small town located in Johnson County, Tennessee. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. Athens is part of the Clarksville-Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is also included in the Chattanooga-Hamilton Metro Statistical Area. The town was founded by James A. Houston in 1876 and named for Athens, Greece. The first post office was opened in Athens on December 1, 1876. The community grew rapidly and by 1890 it had a population of 2,521 residents. In 1901 the name was changed to Athens Junction to promote closer economic ties with other towns in the area. In 1909 the community changed its name again to Athens proper after statehood occurred in that year and until 1961 it continued to be called Athens Junction Fulton County seat

Atheneum College is named after the exploits of General James K. Polk in Vicksburg during the American Civil War. The college was established in 1872 as Knoxville Female Seminary; it changed its name to Atheneum College in 1958 due to sponsorship from Coca Cola Co.; however, Atheneum remains chartered as an independent institution with undergraduate and graduate programs in arts and sciences. Throughout its history, Athenaeum has been home to some of the most accomplished educators including Drs. Alice Roberts Weir (1924-2008), Lewis Siegel (bio), Marvin Minsky (born 1942), Irving Babbitt (1920-2004), Clifford Berryman (1945-2013) and Jane Addams (1863-1964). In addition to famous alumni such as Drs. Weir and Minsky, many notable current graduates include Leslie McFarlane CEO/CEO at Googleplex Campus Corporation; David Wojcicki CEO/CTO at Apple Inc.; Donny Deutsch President & CTO at Microsoft Corp.; Tim Cook CEO/CEO Apple Inc.; Mark Zuckerberg COO Facebook Incorporated; etc.). In recent years, Athenaeum has become known for its innovative initiatives such as its Athena Entrepreneurship Center which provides resources and support for young entrepreneurs starting their own businesses; Athena Innovation Labs which offers postsecondary students access to cutting edge technology laboratories for research projects or first time experimentation; Athena’s Master’s degree program in Business Administration which offers studentships that allow them to work experienced professionals within their industry or business field while completing their studies; Athena’s new School of Fine Arts which will offer art instruction through visual media including dance(Ballet), music( Jazz ), theater( Play )and sculpture( Acrylic ). These initiatives provide opportunities for young adults who want to enterprising careers but may not have had access before to take advantage of Athens’ resources while still attending school.
Areas of Athens, Tennessee history include the early years of the city, when it was named for General Andrew Jackson, and its role in the American Revolution. The city also played a significant role during the Civil War, with its businesses and residents helping to support both sides.
