On October 12, 1911, Yankton residents voted to become the first city in South Dakota to ratify the National Firearms Act. The ordinance establishing the city's police department and gun control regulations followed a few weeks later. handguns were not allowed within city limits at that time.
Yankton, South Dakota is a city in Harlan County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harlan County. Yankton was founded by Mormons in 1861 and named for Brigham Young, who had come to America in 1847 as a Mormon missionary. The first post office in Yankton was established on October 3, 1861. The present building became operational on July 1, 1903. The name of the town derived from an early settler's comment about the "nice sandpipers that nested near our house." In 1865 two Mormon missionaries were killed while preaching on land adjacent topresent-day Yankton when local Sioux attacked and burned their wagon train campground and village burning more than 20 people and destroying some 240 buildings including most of the original Mormon temple which stood until it was destroyed by fire in 1889. In 1893 a railroad station was built; this became one of main transportation hubs for the area until 1971 when Interstate 90 bypassed Yankton center making travel much harder. After years of economic decline due to lack of passenger rail service and other factors the City Council approved plans to build a new downtown mall which would include restaurant/bars/stores etc., but never came to fruition due to financial difficulties over time……………………………………………………………..
