Yankton is a small town in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The town lies on the banks of the Yankton Sioux River, which forms the border between South Dakota and Nebraska. The area now called Yankton was first settled by Native Americans in 1778 as part of what is now North Dakota. The post office at Yankton was established in 1868 and served until 1951. In 1907, what is now Yankton Townshipwas organized from parts of present-day Aberdeen and Rapid City townships. The name "Yankton" came from an Indian word meaning "place where game can be found." The first white settlers arrived in 1875, when James Higgs founded a flour mill on the site that would become known as Higgsville. By 1888, there were over 150 residents living in YankTON Township, with a grocery store and two churches serving as local centers of culture and commerce. During World War I, large quantities of munitions were produced in YankTON; some 5 million rounds were manufactured there alone during the war years 1918-1921). Afterward, mill owners turned their attention to other businesses such as agriculture and cattle ranching while remaining largely agricultural until after World War II when many small farmers began to abandon farming for suburban growth opportunities in nearby cities such as Fargo or Sioux Falls (South Dakota's second largest city). In 1957, following passage of the Interstate Highway System Act (IHSA), construction began on Minnesota State Highway No 129 which would connect Sioux Falls with Omaha through what is today South Dakota's capital city - Murray Hill! SH 129 became known locally as "the highway to nowhere." As time went on regional buses replaced cars for travel within eastern South Dakota so that people could continue using their farms for production even if they no longer had access to IHSA funding sources Additionally it has been argued that this increase in truck traffic along SH 129 contributed significantly to increased dust storms experienced aroundtowns located near highways during periods of drought

Yankton is a small town in South Dakota and it has been around since the 1870s. It was founded by farmers who came to the area from Minnesota. The town was originally called "Moccasin" because of how many moccasins were found here. Yankton got its name from the Sioux word yanka, meaning "place where there are plenty of buffalo." In 1882, Yankton became an important rail stop on the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1925, it was renamed "Lincoln". In 1957, Yankton became a city. Today, it is a small agricultural community with a population of about 1,500 people. The first settlers to arrive in Yankton were farmers who came overland from Minnesota. They named their town Moccasin because they found so many moccasins here. There were also early traders and entrepreneurs who moved into this area and started selling goods such as supplies, clothing, and land. By 1850, there were more than 100 inhabitants living in Yankton. The first settler to die in Yankton was James Atherstone in 1872 when he was crushed under a wagon wheel while trying to get water for his cattle near the riverbank. This event helped start the tradition of cremating bodies in Yankton which continued until 1975! In 1865, Jno Cramer opened what is now known as Slippery Rock Cafe which quickly became one of the most popular places in town for breakfast or lunch Illegitimate children born out of wedlock were sometimes given this name by their parents since it sounded less reproaching and more like an honest mistake made during childhood - something that could be rectified if properly reported to authorities

The town of Yankton was founded in 1881 by George W. Dixon and his brother-in-law, John Nance. The town was named for the Yankton Sioux tribe's name for their hunting ground, "Yanktona." The first store in the town opened in 1882. Yankton began to grow rapidly after it became a county seat in 1896. It had a population of around 5,000 people by 1910. By 1920, the population had reached 12,000 people and by 1930 it had grown to over 20,000 people. In 1960, Yankton became an independent city and it has since been the largest city in South Dakota.
