The town’s name was chosen after Mr. Yankton’s donation of $1,000 to help finance its construction. By 1889, there were over 100 residents living in downtown Yankton and surrounding villages; by 1912, the population had reached 2,500 people. Although it struggled during World War I (1914-18),YDankson recovered quickly following the war and experienced rapid growth during Prohibition (1920-35). In 1929,YDankson became one of only two communities in South Dakota to elect their own mayor when Pierre Journell took office as governor.
In 1861, the town of Yankton was founded by Dakota Sioux Indians. The first post office in Yankton was established on July 1, 1861. On October 5, 1871, the town became a city and it is now the capital of South Dakota.
