Yankton is a small town located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census and 2,014 as of 2010. It is the most populous incorporated community in South Dakota and has been since its incorporation in 1885. The first permanent settler in Yankton was John Chambers, who moved from Spearfish in 1882 to what is now downtown Yankton after finding land for his horse and wagon on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1886, Yankton became one of seventy-eight townships within Indian Territory when that territory was organized into United States territory following the Indian Wars of 1868-1871. On July 9, 1887, Yankton's charter was amended to grant it city status under ordinance No. 6362 which allowed for "the erection of buildings for public use" within a radius of two miles (3 kilometers). In 1902, an agreement between Sioux Nation leaders and US government officials resulted in 54 Lakota men being released from prison at Wounded Knee Creek by US military forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman as part of ongoing negotiations leading up to ending World War I. As part of this agreement, the Lakota men were forced to leave their villages near present-day Pierre and move into reservations east of the Cannonball River resided by white settlers known as “Turtle Mountain Negroes” because they were not considered citizens by either tribe or government authorities. The village site where Yankton now stands was chosen due to its location close to water resources that would be useful during wartime with potential supplies arriving via boatload every day from Great Lakes ports such as Duluth on Lake Superior and Chicago on Lake Michigan; this made it possible for early white farmers within range to build flour mills capable manufacturing goods essential for war effort including ammunition drums and other items used by soldiers on campaign trails throughout Minnesota., In 1925–1926 a major fire destroyed much OFY commercial building including several stores including J & G Knowles Mercantile Store #2 which remain standing today across river from First National Bank Building where current frame structure replaced brick/timber veneer construction after great fire damage in 1926
On November 5, 1886, Yankton became the 27th town in Dakota Territory.
