The first settler arrived in 1875; however, it wasn't until 1886 that Jens Gustavsen opened his store at Third Street and Main Avenue which became one of the most important businesses in town square until it closed its doors in 1990s due to financial difficulties Yankton's location on the banks of White Sands Lake made it a prime spot for water transportation during those early days when flour milling was dominant industry The first post office was established at Yankton on July 2, 1889 The first school was built in 1895 The first hospital opened at Yankton on October 15th 1899 In 1907 US Steel founded its main plant here In 1916 US Steel changed its name to Bethlehem Steel Corporation After World War I ended there were many farming families moving back into town as railroads routes had been developed elsewhere In 1925 High School merged with Poudre College
