Watertown is a town in Hardin County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,917 at the 2010 census. Watertown is the county seat of Hardin County. It is part of the Sioux City, IA-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Watertown originated as a Sioux mission station on the forks of the Missouri and Platte rivers in what is now south central South Dakota. On July 10, 1868, it was founded by Daniel Boone and his band of settlers as Fort Boone (the name given to it by General Custer after they destroyed an important Apache encampment near present-day buffalo National Monument). The fort served as a military outpost until 1886 when it was abandoned due to malaria epidemics that swept through South Dakota during that year. In 1915, Watertown became home to South Dakota's first high school when Riverview High School opened in what was then known as downtown Watertown. At that time, all 7 public schools in Hardin County were consolidated into one building on Broadway Street; however, Riverview remains open today as a charter school with classes starting at 7:00am each morning for students in grades 6-12th grade. In 1927, water rights were bought from Sioux City farmers who had been using them for irrigation purposes and turned over to the city for use as water supplies for hardhatters working on Canby Ranch in northeast South Dakota; this event helped give Watertown its nickname "The watering hole" because so much drinking occurred within easy reach of most people living there during those days. On December 12, 1896 Wacoaluma Siding Company announced intentions to build a mill northwest of town limits on the confluence of two large creeks - Spruce Creek and Iron Creek - which would have created more than 20 jobs throughout their construction process; however these plans never progressed beyond concept because no money could be found to finance them even though they were estimated to cost $5 million dollars ($ 100 million in current dollars). Eventually only 2 out of 20 jobs actually resulted from this project which did not begin until 1935 when local businessman Floyd Dickey invested some money into it and renamed it "Dickey's Mill". Watertown was founded in 1875 by a group of pioneers, led by Peter H. Smith, who named their settlement after the town of Watertown, Massachusetts. The town grew rapidly and within a few years had a population of over 100 people. In 1879, the first post office was established in Watertown and soon became one of the most important towns in South Dakota. By 1902, the town had a school and store. Watertown experienced some significant growth during World War II as it became one of the largest military installations in South Dakota. The city also played an important role in postwar reconstruction and served as both an economic center and political stronghold for local Democrats. In the 1960s, water shortages caused many businesses to close throughout South Dakota due to decreased usage from agriculture and industry. However, Watertown quickly revived as a downtown commercial district with several new businesses opening up along its restored Streetscape street grid. Today, Watertown is home to several museums, including the Sioux Falls Museum of Art and History; a library; several restaurants; and numerous small businesses that contribute to its vibrant community spirit.
