Watertown was named for Johnstown (now Johnstown, Pennsylvania), a small town in western Pennsylvania that had been founded by General James K. Polk in 1847 as a fur trading post on the Missouri River. The name first appeared on a map created by Captain George Sweet in 1851. The first permanent settler in what later became Watertown was Nicholas Ewing, who arrived there with his family from New York City on July 20, 1857. He built the first house and laid out the streets of what is now Watertown through surveys and purchases from Native Americans. By 1861, when it was renamed for Johnstown's founder, General James K Polk—the only Ulysses S. Grant to be elected president twice—the community numbered about 100 people and consisted of just six three-story houses and one two-story houseEwing lived in until his death on October 15, 1906 at age 85 years 9 months 3 days."
