Watertown is a city in Spencer County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 10,859 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 and named after the nearby Standing Rock Sioux tribe's waterfalls. In 1911, the Watertown Shooters Club was founded to promote gun rights and education in the town. The club is still active today and does not allow handguns. Watertown also has an annual parade which celebrates its history with floats and music from local bands.

Watertown was established in 1892 by settlers from Illinois and Minnesota. The name "Watertown" comes from the Sioux word "Watanka," meaning "watercourse." The first post office opened in 1893. The present day town was founded on November 3, 1892 when pioneers arrived from Illinois and Minnesota to homestead near what is now Sioux City. They named their new settlement after John Custer's headwaters, Watanka Creek. Widespread panic followed when General Custer's cavalry was killed at Battle of Little Bighorn on July 6, 1865. Many residents of Watertown abandoned the community during that time as they were fearful of another Indian war which could have devastating consequences for them and their families. However, over time many people returned to Watertown because it had become a reliable stopping place on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves and small farmers who wanted to avoid being caught by Ulysses S Grant's army during his marches through Kansas in 1872-73. During World War II many local businesses supplied materials for Soldier Milling Plant #1 (now known as Ford Motor Company) in nearby Omaha due to its location near both Omaha and Council Bluffs along I-80/90 corridor

Watertown was founded in 1865 by the Father of Sioux nation, Ignatius J. Donnelly. The town was named after the then-recently created Dakota Territory and its main watercourse, the White River. In 1868, Watertown became a territorial capital underNebraska Territory's jurisdiction and it served as such until 1870 when it reverted back to Dakota Territory control. In 1903, Watertown amalgamated with neighboring Rapid City to form the city of Rapid City.
