Watertown is one of five sister towns in Watertown Indian Reservation. Watertown was founded by Christian missionaries in 1876 as Easton, Nebraska, after they found springs there that could be used to irrigate farmland in Sioux County. The name Watertown comes from the nearby Missouri River where pioneer families built dams to store and use water from the river for irrigation purposes. In 1907, when south Dakota became a state, Watertown became its capital and remained so until 1919 when it merged with Aberdeen to form Aberdeen-Watertown-Aberdeen (AWA). The people of Watertown are descendants of those who founded Easton and continue to live there today. They are also descendants of other early settlers who arrived in this area during the Transcontinental Railroad era: John Dickey and his family arrive in 1868; Salmon Pekosi arrives in 1870; David Noble arrival in 1872; Solomon Northrop arrives in 1879; John Aikens arrival date unknown; James Kappert arrivaldate unknown but probably around 1880s Today, many residents work abroad or have moved away because of changes within their own communities due to economic decline or global warming effects. However, many local businesses still operate unchanged including various shops along Main Street which serve food made fresh daily from ingredients sourced locally including produce grown on the property

Watertown is a town in neighboring Rapid City, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rapid City–Savage County, SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Watertown was founded in 1872 by Norwegian immigrants as an agricultural and ranching town on the Missouri River between what are now Sioux Falls and Pierre. The town name derived from WATER which means "watercourse" in Scandinavian languages and Town was platted on October 10, 1872 by J.T. Hickey with a land grant from President Ulysses S. Grant. The post office at Watertown opened on November 15, 1872, and served until it closed on December 12th of that year because of mail fraud by American Express Company employees John Fenton and James Moffatt In 1886 settlers formed the first Masonic Lodge in South Dakota Territory when they met to form the Order of Eagles there In 1898 Congress passed a bill creating Indian reservations in South Dakota Territory; this caused many pioneers to flee away from Sioux Falls into temporary refugee camps near Watertown until 1893 when Congress repealed all legislation concerning Indian reservations
Watertown was founded in 1876 as a railroad town on the Missouri River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1900 it had a population of 25,000. In 1914, the Wisconsin Central Railroad merged with the Union Pacific Railroad, and Watertown became part of Omaha, Nebraska. However, water shortages in World War I led to the closure of the Omaha-Council Bluffs line in 1919. As a result, Watertown lost its access to the river and its growth stopped.
