Watertown is a small city located in southwest South Dakota, about an hour's drive from Sioux Falls. The city was founded by the Dakota people in 1875, and today it is the home of one of the largest ammunition factories in the United States. By the 16th century muzzle loading artillery had been developed that could fire volleys of cannonballs at high speed through hoops on either side of the tube allowing for greater accuracy and range than previous technologies
Watertown was founded in 1872 by Major James Fenton, who named it for the town of Worcester, Massachusetts. The first post office in Watertown was established in 1875. Ammunition production began in Watertown in 1898 and continued until 1907. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from Watertown to Rapid City, South Dakota.

During World War II, Watertown served as the site of one of the largest concentration camps for civilians during the war, known as "Camp 2". More than 100 people were interned there between 1944 and 1945; many died due to disease or malnutrition while incarcerated.

Ammunition has also undergone numerous changes in design over the years for various reasons such as ensuring compatibility with different firearms (e.g., expanding bullets) or reducing recoil (e.g., metallic bullets). Today’s ammunition is a diverse mixture of various materials including metal alloys (such as brass), plastic pellets (used in handguns), glass projectiles (for hunting), explosives such as dynamite and nitroglycerine, incendiary bullets such as blackpowder pistolsand incendiary shells called “fireball shots”; smokeless powders like cordite; lead-alloyedProjectiles; armor piercing rounds suitable for anti-tank warfare; sniper rounds designed specifically for killing small game; tracer rounds which are colouredrapnel which travel through the air to engage targets below ground
In the early 1800s, percussion caps were the most common type of ammunition. They fired a small round with a metal dart that could be shot multiple times. The use of powder and shot made reloading much easier, and cap pistols became popular as Backup Guns.
