Watertown, South Dakota is a town located in Love County, Iowa. It was founded in 1871 by Capt. John F. Hickey and his wife Emma. The town was named after Watertown, Massachusetts, which was the site of an early fur trading post. In 1879, Captain Hickey donated land to the town for a school and square. The first building in Watertown was the Masonic Lodge on First Street. By 1908, the population of Watertown had grown to 2,500 people and it became a city in 1912. In 1925, water shortages caused the closure of several mills in South Dakota and Iowa; as a result, many businesses stopped operations in Watertown and its residents turned to airguns as their primary source of income. In 1930-1931, Airgun World magazine published an article about airguns entitled "The Beginnings of Airguns". The article described how early pioneers of airguns such as Drudge designed guns that fired pellets with leaves or other objects as projectiles instead of shot shells or balls

Watertown has been home to an agricultural community since 1872 and now produces soybeans, corn, wheat, and other crops. Watertown was founded on the confluence of the Missouri and Platte Rivers by settlers from Iowa in 1872. A post office was established in 1875, and the town name was changed to Watertown in 1907. In 1911, a flour mill was built there which continues to produce flour for local markets today. The city's first hospital opened its doors in 1912 and became known as Sioux Falls General Hospital until it merged with Mercy Health System in 2004. Watertown is located at (38.866667,-101.436333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land.
