Vermillion, South Dakota is a small town located in Ouray County, south of Rapid City. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Vermillion was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1541. After his failed attempt to find the Great Lakes he turned his attention to the Sioux and Black Hills region of present-day South Dakota. He named this area San Miguel de Allende after one of his Santiago del Rio discoveries in Mexico City. In 1868, Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States and along with other politicians traveled through what is now South Dakota on their way to campaign for reelection. On September 17th they reached the village of Vermillion and arrived on horseback just before nightfall. They were warmly welcomed by locals who had been waiting for several weeks for their arrival. Grant's visit marked a turning point for Vermillion as it became an important stop on his many trips throughout America during that time period. He also donated land to make up for any mistakes made during the Civil War bySouth Dakota Territory Judge Amos Kendall which ultimately led to much development in that area over ensuing years including major oil wells drilled hereabouts during the 1970s and 1980s boom times
