There was a fire at the Vermillion Rifle and Pistol Club on October 3, 1907. The club had been holding matches the previous day, and when they finished, they set off for a picnic in nearby City Creek. As they were leaving, a group of men who were playing around the campfire started shooting at them with pistols. One man got hit by one of the rounds, and he died as a result. After this event, everyone stopped using handguns for target practice at campgrounds because it was too dangerous.
Vermillion is a town in Stanton County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,918 at the 2010 census. The townsite was named for Vermillion, a small village in Mexico City that was destroyed by an eruption of the Andes mountains in 1859. A post office called Vermillion was established in 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The first settler to come to what is now Vermillion were two men from Canada who came overland from the Canadian Rockies on July 20, 1887. They named their new place after their native land: "Vermilion", Spanish for "a deep red." In 1895, the Kiowa Indians began raiding neighboring settlements and took goods and cattle to sell along the Platte River. Sheriff John Curry ordered his forces to set up camp at what is now Vermilion and began watching for the Indian raiders. On October 11 of that year, he discovered six Sioux Indians raiding a wagon train traveling down Canyon Creek near present-day Spearfish. He quickly organized his men into companies and pursued the Sioux riders into Indian Territory where they were officially captured as outlaws on October 12th by Ulysses S. Grant's troops under General Cloudy With Attitude (later Major General George Crook). In 1903, control of territorial boundaries passed from US to Mexican hands when America won its war with Mexico; however South Dakota did not become part of Mexico proper until 1912 when Texas ceded all its territory east of the Pecos River including Vermillion to Congress as part of Treaty No 4 following its annexation by Texas during World War I。 So while Mexicans still lived here illegally until later on duringborder conflicts (1946-1982), it wasn't considered part of Mexican country proper like other southern US states which became US Territories following WWI}. In 1916 local school board member Jens Wallin suggested naming a high school after Emilie McCullough who had been Killed during WWI; so instead name High School for Emilie McCullough today! This goes back even further than then as her husband John Wiegand also donated land for a high school system back beforevermilion had any public schools let alone one named after him} . In 1935 local citizens wanted another store built so they name it Super Store; but again this goes back much earlier too as there were already several stores around here called simply "Store" or just "Stor" before that!

VERMILION, SOUTH DAKOTA HISTORY Vermilion was founded in 1868 by the Pawnee Sioux and Dakota nation. The town was named for the bright rediscovered ore of coal that had been discovered there a few years earlier. Vermillion rapidly became a small, but important center of trading and commerce. In 1912, Vermilion became the capital of South Dakota. The city remained an important economic and cultural center well into the 20th century. Today, Vermilion is a small community located just outside of Pierre.
Vermillion was founded in 1881 by J.D. Rockefeller and his brother John D. Rockefeller Jr. as a small town on the South Dakota-Iowa border. The early years of its development were difficult, due to the unsettled nature of the Territory at that time and the lack of transportation options. However, Vermillion soon became an important trading center for farmers in both states and the town boomed with business during the early1900s. In 1926, Vermillion became a city after it was annexed by Sioux City, Iowa. The city growth continued through the 1930s and 1940s, until World War II caused a significant decline in its population; however, since then there has been modest growth rates which have helped maintain Vermilion's status as an important regional center.
