In 1866, however, an agent of President Andrew Johnson found no gold while investigating claims in neighboring Black Hills; thus ended the occupation of Montana by American troops during the Sioux War of 1867-1868. In 1870s many farmers moved into central South Dakota to find new land for their crops due to bountiful monsoons that year.
