A company called the North West Company built trading posts along the Missouri River in what is now southern South Dakota in 1845-46 and farther upriver near present day Spearfish. In 1857, Sioux City was founded on an Indian reservation east of present day Sioux Falls by General Anthony Armstrong Kearny and other American military officers under orders from President James Buchanan. Kearny had come down the Mississippi River with some 1,500 soldiers and Fur trader Pierre Dorion organized 4 companies totaling 22 men to build a new town on the site which they named after their patron saint: Saint Louis de Montréal (L'Apostle François). In 1862 General William Tecumseh Sherman's army marched through South Dakota on its way southward during the AmericanCivil War following his victory at Cedar Creek. As part of Sherman's " March Through History" he passed through Sioux Falls on his march from Council Bluffs to Omaha on May 25th 1865; it was also here that he met with General Crook who recommended him for appointment as commander-in-chief of all Union forces in Central America - an assignment which Sherman accepted without delay upon learning about it from Crook himself! In 1865-66 another group of Americans founded what became known asthe Sioux City Land Improvement Co., majorityowned by Jesse Reno (1817-89), one time mayor of Omaha who had been turned over by Nebraska Governor Colfax to help finance aspects of Sheridan's war effort against Native American tribes throughout much central Nebraska Territory including South Dakota where he served concurrently as territorial governor from 1889 until his death in 1903... The landImprovementCo.'s main business product was agriculture but they also sold lumber and conducted other commercial activities such as insurance sales etc... They developed a well system which supplied water even when there was no rainfall for months on end; this system remainVirtually unchanged today! And finally they laid out streets grid fashion...
