In 1948, during Reconstruction Eraomics in South Dakota after statehood was granted by Congress under President Harry S Truman’s Executive Order 9981 (dated January 3), Sioux Falls joined other American cities in hosting celebrations honoring black Americans who had made significant contributions to their communities through jury service or business acumen. Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a city in and the county seat of Sioux County, South Dakota. The population was 2,354 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River near its confluence with the Cannonball River. The name Sioux Falls means "the place where buffalo grazed." The first Europeans to visit Sioux Falls were French traders in 1682. In 1872, gold was discovered in what is now Spearfish County and settlers began arriving from Iowa and Minnesota to property flood-cleared land east of the Missouri River. By 1880, Sioux Falls had a population of 553. Rapid growth followed until around 1920 when natural gas began being produced at nearby Mitchell Lake. This caused economic stagnation as production declined for lack of infrastructure; however, during World War II there was significant development due to military activity and new energy sources such as oil shale fracking that have returned since then. In recent years Sioux Falls has experienced growth thanks to an increasing number of tourists attractions including two theme parks (Aurora Park/Aurora Golf Course & Cedar Point), several restaurants and bars, multiple golf courses (including one owned by Forbes Golf) as well as business expansions including a major downtown mall which opened in 2009 and plans for additional retail development are ongoing. The first European visitors to this area were French traders who landed on the river in 1682 along with their Indian guides Fort Steele on September 10th[1]. The fort served as a trading post between France and Native nations until it burned down in 1759[2].
