The Historic District has 14 buildings that were erected between 1886-1899 inclusive - three are listed on the National Register Of Historic Places: Fort Abraham Lincoln Museum (1902), First Presbyterian Church (1896), and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1920). Five more buildings are included oncludes contributing properties in this district which are all business districts built after 1899; these include Guaranty Trust Company Building (1903), Ralston Purina Company Building (1901-04), Harriman Warehouse/ Eastern Mining Co., Inc./Alcoa Steel Works Warehouse (1920s),and Bethlehem Steel Corporation/Nedbank Plaza Shopping Center(1982).

The Sioux Falls metropolitan area is one of the most populous in the United States. The population is estimated to be almost 700,000 people and it includes all of Sioux Falls County as well as an overlay of western Dickinson County. The city is the county seat and largest city in South Dakota. The first permanent settler in what is now Sioux Falls was Danish immigrant Ole Andreas Christensen who arrived in 1854. He named his land "Sioux City" after the Sioux nation who he thought would protect it from Indian attack. In 1868, Johannes Brunner purchased 1,544 acres (560 hectares) of land on the east side of the Platte River for $5 per acre. He built a log cabin and began to cultivate crops that he sold to local farmers for goods and services. Brunner also raised hogs, sheep, pigs, cows, horses and other animals which he sold to others in town or took home with him when he left. In 1870-71 Jens Christiansen started planting cotton on his farm north of town. When this went into production some residents decided to move into Sioux Falls so they could have access to this new industry which had begun growing rapidly throughout the Midwest at this time. In 1874-75 Valentine Petersen bought 640 acres (240 hectares) northeast of town on Elk Creek for $10 per acre from Johann Pfafferer who had also founded a small community there about two years earlier called White Sands Hills northwest of town near present day North Dakota State University campus). Petersen named his property "Pioneer Valley." This location became important because it provided easy access to water supplies necessary for farming while also providing hunting opportunities due to its close proximity to several 1100 foot peaks that offered excellent views from any point within range
