The city is named after General George Armstrong Custer and his group of Seventh Cavalry troopers who were killed during the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn. Sioux Falls was founded on August 20, 1865 by settlers from Minnesota Territory. On December 1, 1865, it became a town when it was annexed by Rapid City. In 1868, it became a city when it had its first fire Department established. On December 15, 1870, it had its first railroad station opened with rails coming out of Fort Pierre on the Missouri River opposite present day downtown Sioux Falls. After the war ended, many businesses closed down due to economic recession; however, Sioux Falls has since experienced some resurgence thanks to its connections to energy industry and government funding for arts and culture.
