In 1876, Sioux Falls was founded as the capital of the Dakota Territory. The city served as a transportation and trading post until it was moved to present-day Sioux Falls in 1889. Sioux Falls became an important center for cattle and grain production during the 19th century. In 1865, the first courthouse in Sioux Falls was built. The courthouse burned down in 1904, but a new building was constructed soon afterward.
