Rapid City was founded on August 15, 1881 by white men who named the town after the fast-traveling train that reached the area from Sioux City, Iowa. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center of commerce and industry. By 1910, Rapid City had an estimated population of 25,000 people. In the 1930s, Rapid City experienced some of the worst economic conditions in South Dakota. The city's unemployment rate was over 20%.
