In 1902, a group led by Cattleman Harry Laughlin purchased 317 acres (121 hectares) along Rapid River north of present-day Rapid City for $10 per acre ($140 per km²). Laughlin named his new town "Laughlin" after himself and donated all or part of his profits from cattle ranching to build public schools and other civic amenities. The rapid growth during World War I led to increased demand for housing; development continued until World War II when there was a lull due to wartime rationing. During World War II, many B-29 Superfortresses were built at Wichita Army Air Field in Kansas; this gave rise to the nickname "The Windjammer". To avoid Allied bombers hitting Wichita with incendiary bombs while they were still being fueled up over North Adams IL., Laughlin built oil refineries near Rapid City so that bombers could fly into these refineries without detonating their bombs prematurely which would have caused fires inside those factories (this was also done with Oklahoma City Refinery during same timeframe). A major fire destroyed most aspects of Laughlin's refinery complex on May 16th 1945 just before takeoff from Kearney AFB airport[1]. This event remains one of history's worst industrial accidents ever.[2] Aftermath: 400 people lost their lives & millions were injured
