Mitchell is a small town located in South Dakota. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pierre-Lacombe Micropolitan Statistical Area. Mitchell is the only city in South Dakota that does not have a school district. Mitchell was founded in 1881 by George Mitchell and his wife, Lillie. The first settler in Mitchell was Jno. Pritchard who arrived on July 1, 1881. In 1885, John Alder arrived from Nebraska with his family and set up a store in what is now downtown Mitchell. The first post office in Mitchell opened on December 7, 1886. The name of the town originated from nearby Hill City which had been named for General James Hill (1792–1868), an American Revolutionary War general and President of Missouri (1801-1809). In 1912,laughter Rufus Hapgood donated land to be used as a school district which became the nucleus around which today's Mitchell community developed. At that time, it consisted of just three homes - Hapgood House, White House and First Presbyterian Church - but since then it has grown exponentially with additions to the periphery such as Sinclair Farms Dairy and Morningside Resort Golf Course! Today there are over 4200 residents living within one mile radius of downtown or less! Today's economy revolves around agriculture thanks to its fertile soil and well managed cattle herds; however two primary industries remain important: healthcare services provided through health clinics run by Sioux Falls Hospital District No 2 & Sioux Falls Medical Center; as well as local manufacturing: trucking company Phillips Machine Works being based off Main Street while also having an assembly line for their vehicles produced here; these businesses provide jobs for locals while simultaneously sustaining Mitchell's unique character!

In 1895, Mitchell became a county seat after it was chosen by vote of its citizens. The population reached 4,000 by 1910 but declined to 2,500 by 1920 due to factors such as economic recession and World War I. In 1930, Mitchell passed through an annexation process which made it an incorporated city. The population began to rebound during the 1960s following protests against federal government corruption and social unrest that developed throughout South Dakota at that time. Today, Mitchell is home to over 30 businesses and employs more than 500 people within its borders.
