The first scopes were built here at the Observatory, and the Observatory became a national center for astronomy education and research in 1922. In 1951, Dr. Edwin Hubble was born in Mitchell and grew up here; he is considered one of the most famous astronomers of our time. Over time, other owners have added to or replaced the original equipment at the Observatory- including a camera obscura in 1925, an American Optical Company reflector telescope in 1955, and a Hughes Astrophysics Telescope in 1968. Mitchell is home to two churches, one Baptist and one Methodist, as well as a high school and three schools for children. The town also has a library and six businesses including two gas stations and four general stores. Mitchell was founded by Germans in 1876. The first post office was established in Mitchell in 1881. In 1912, the name of the town changed to Mitchell after General George Custer was killed near Battle Creek on July 22nd, 1916 during World War I. At that time, much of what is now Mitchell was an Indian reservation which served as a base for the American Indian Scouts known as "Custer's Scouts." After World War II ended, most German-owned business closed down or merged with other businesses while some operations continued until they were discontinued around 1980 when all but one store closed down due to heavy competition from larger towns within 20 miles of Mitchell. The population growth rate in Mitchell has been moderate (1%) since 2000; however it has seen an increase (+2%) in Sioux Falls which surrounds Mitchell geographically

Mitchell is located on the banks of the Missouri River at its confluence with Crazy Horse Creek. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census; it had fallen to 1,362 in 2000. As an agricultural center for much of its history, Mitchell has been known for its corn and other grains crops as well as livestock production such as cattle, horses, sheep and pigs. The town was named after Captain John Apted Mitchell who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and also died there while fighting against Confederate forces in 1865. Captain Apted had come north from Illinois along with his regiment during the winter of 1861/62 when Abraham Lincoln was first elected president and he became involved with local politics hereabouts). In 1881 United States Senator James M McClellan appointed Captain Apted Jr., then a private citizen to be postmaster general for South Dakota due to his military service experiences which McClellan noted about him (McClellan later said that this appointment showed "the gravity of our situation"). When news reached Aberdeen about an Indian attack on a white settler outpost near Great Sioux Lake several miles east acrossriver on December 5th1886 many people started moving westward into what would become Aberdeen due to reports coming back from that area including some accounts stating Geronimo himself had led 400 warriors into North Dakota Territory seeking refuge from war they were waging against General Custer’s army after weeks long pursuit on their way south) so whenCaptainAptedwasappointedtobepostmastergeneralforthesouth Dakotasosideringthatthisappointmentshowedthegravityofoursituation).
