Mitchell, South Dakota is located in the heart of the Badlands and has been a center for target shooting for over seventy years. The first target holders were erected on the present site of Mitchell High School in 1922. Over time, various other locations have been used for target shooting purposes, but Mitchell has always been home to one of the most famous and popular range facilities in the Dakotas. The original Mitchell Gun Club was fashioned from scratch by W.J.Morrow in 1922 as an effort to promote rifle shooting within local high school students. At its peak membership numbered close to 100 individuals, with instruction available both during morning and afternoon sessions at the club house on North Union Street. The gun club quickly became well known throughout Mitchell and even served as a model for similar organizations established throughout the Dakotas. In 1944, when badger hunting became legal in South Dakota, members of the gun club met together to discuss strategies for staging hunts on government ranches utilizing black powder shotguns mounted on horseback. After observing successful badger hunts conducted by other clubs across the state, they formulated a plan which eventually lead to their establishment as the State Rifle Association (SRA)Badlands Branch #1 since that year. It wasn’t until 1957 that good Shooting Ranges Incorporated (GSI) was formed as a result of merger between twogunclubs-the Mitchell Gun Club and Sioux City Rifle & Shotgun Club-and it was this organization which ultimately offered member privileges at GSI ranges throughout South Dakota!

These include: The Mitchell Museum of Art; The Sioux City Band of Mennonites; The African American Chamber of Commerce; The Sioux Falls Symphony Orchestra; South Dakota State University; and numerous other local organizations.

Mitchell, South Dakota is a town located in Sioux County, South Dakota. The population was 1,906 at the 2000 census. Mitchell has been in existence since 1881 and was named for Colonel John Mitchell who settled the area. The town started as a small farming community with just 10 residents. By 1907, the population had increased to 100 and by 1920 it had reached 300. In 1931, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 500. The post office opened on December 12, 1906 (just two weeks after Mitchell was founded) and served until 1959 when it closed due to lack of mail service. On July 20th of that year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his final address from Mount Rushmore National Monument which included remarks about Mitchell: "The city of Mitchell stands out conspicuously in this locality because its founders were men of enterprise and culture – men like Jens Jensen and Ole Kirk Christiansen – not only because they were pioneers but also because their departure left behind an enduring legacy." In 1951, Prince David Friedrichs VC awarded General James Gavin his fourth Military Cross for heroism during World War II at Battle of Iwo Jima where he commanded Company K2/4LII US Marine Infantry Battalion which spearheaded the attack against Japanese positions
Mitchell was founded in 1876 by Samuel D. Mitchell and his wife, Julia. The town was named for Mitchell's father-in-law, John G. Mitchell. In 1902, the first post office in Mitchell opened. The town grew rapidly and by 1914 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1917, the first college in South Dakota opened in Mitchell and it remains the only college in South Dakota today.
