Mitchell is a small town in south Dakota, United States. It was founded in 1881 by German immigrants and has been the seat of Mitchell County since 1907. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is located in the center of Mitchell County and is bordered to the north by North Dakota and to the east by Sioux City, Iowa. The first settler in what would become Mitchell County was Wilhelm Weber. He arrived from Germany on horseback in 1881. Weber built a log cabin near present-day Mitchell and started farming land that he had purchased from Indians. In 1883, he married Anna Krause, who came to America from Germany with her parents. They farmed until 1893 when they moved to what would become South Dakota Territory. They took up homesteading here and began raising chickens and cows. Also during this time, Wilhelm Weber constructed an early cotton gin on his farm which became one of the largest cotton gins in South Dakota history. In 1907, soon after South Dakota became a state, treaty negotiations were held between Sioux City residents (then parts of Iowa) and representatives from Mitchell County over lands that would later be included within the new state boundaries. The results of these negotiations led to creation of South Dakota Territory which included all of Mitchell County as well as some land beyond it including what is now North Dakota’s Cheyenne River Valley). On December 10th 1907, Governor James Murchison signed legislation creating Mitchell County from portions of Sioux City Township No 2 (now near Rapid City), Rapid City Township No 3 (now Moorhead), Indianola Township No 1 (now Pierre), and Anoka Township No 2 (now Aberdeen). At its creation, county officials named it “Mitchell” after then-Senator George H., Clinton’s father-in-law who had served as US Minister at London during much of this period; however today "Mitchell" appears only on maps associated with county government activities
Mitchell was founded in 1881 by Wiley Tomlin. In 1906, the town was renamed Mitchell after Senator George Mitchell of Massachusetts. The town experienced a population increase in the 1940s and 1950s due to the construction of M-I-T-H National Bank and other businesses. The population decline took place during the 1960s and 1970s as a result of rural exodus and decreases in agricultural activity.
