The name Mitchell comes from George Custer's last words to his regiment, "Mitchell Station" in 1876. The first settler in Mitchell was David Ballinger in 1875. A post office called Mitchel was established in 1879, and remained in operation until 1907. The town Growth spurt during the early 1900s due to an influx of farmers and miners who found work on the railroad and other businesses opened up around it. In 1913, local school superintendent Prentice Haughton built a school for Mitchell students on a hill overlooking the town square which quickly became home to many local residents who wanted their children close by should they decide to stay after leaving college or military service. According to the US Census Bureau, 1,812 people live in Mitchell today including 622 households of which 204 are rural and 805 are urban (non-Hispanic white). There are also 185 housing developments associated with Mitchell that have been developed since 2000 alone: Centerville Village II (1999), Sheridan Park (1998), Centerpointe (1996), Garden Prairie (1994), Willow Grove I(1992). Today’s economy is centered around agriculture with major crops being corn, soybeans, wheat and hay; as well as services such as law enforcement and healthcare. Manufacturing operations focus on textiles and plastics; wood products; vehicle parts; restaurant construction materials; agricultural equipment; ammunition ; uranium processing chemicals In terms of education there are over 220 students enrolled at both public schools within Mitchell County as well as private K- 12 schools located outside of town limits which include: Sioux Falls Area School District #1 (southwest side) - 9th through 12th grades South Dakota State University - Department of Agricultural Sciences - 7th through 11th grades As a result of its diverse economy and education opportunities that come along with it – Mitchell has become one of America’s fastest-growing communities while still maintaining its friendly small-town feel
Mitchell was founded in 1881 by John Mitchell. In 1911, the town became a census-designated place.
