It was renamed Mitchell on December 5, 1907 after Colonel John Dennison Mitchell of the Constitutional Battalion who fought in the Black Hills War for Sioux Nation against General George Armstrong Custer and other white military forces. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II as many farmers moved to the area to fight in the war or provide support to their families. After the war, Mitchell experienced a decline in population due to various factors such as economic hardship and rural exodus. However, it has undergone an extensive revitalization project over the past decade that has seen new businesses opened up and more people moving into town.
