Mitchell, South Dakota is a city in Douglas County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 7,865 at the 2010 census. Mitchell was founded on November 10, 1912 by settlers from Illinois and Wisconsin. It became a town on December 3, 1916.

Mitchell is a small town in the US state of South Dakota. The population was 262 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the Missouri River, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Pierre. The first settler in Mitchell was Andrew Siver, who arrived in 1854. He built a cabin and called it "Siver's Camp". A post office was established in Mitchell in 1859, and for many years it served as the only community within what is now Mitchell County. In 1902, an act to create Thurston County was passed by Congress, but no one moved to Thurston until 1912 when John Fenton platted what would become Mitchell and named it after his friend and neighbor Andrew Siver. In 1915, when World War I began, Union Army troops from South Dakota entered the conflict andmany men from Mitchell enlisted. They were sent to fight with their fellow Dakotans on the Western Front. Many of these soldiers never returned home; some are still buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Some of those who did return later married locals and started families of their own; today there are six children living in Mitchell who were born while their fathers were serving in World War I or during its aftermath.
