Mitchell is a town in South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. Mitchell is the county seat of Dickinson County. It is part of the Rapid City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Mitchell was David Allyn in 1881. Allyn and his family built a log cabin on an east-west road that later became State Highway 10. In 1911, White Tail post office opened on state highway 10 and named after one of Mitchell's founders, John White Tail (1858-1941). In 1932, Highway 10 was divided into two routes: one went through downtown while the other passed through eastern Mitchell village before terminating near Interstate 80 south of town. In 1950, Dakota Rural Telephone Company bought all telephone lines within Mitchell village and operating them as a municipal utility until deregulation in 1984 gave phone companies license to operate under their own names throughout much of the US marketplaces during the late 1980s Thereafter, Dakota Rural Telephone Company continued to provide telecommunications services for Mitchell until its sale to CenturyLink in 2006. Mitchell has developed into an agricultural town with cattle ranching as its primary industry; wheat farming is also common but decreasing due to dry weather conditions and plantings changes over time; forestry products are also produced such as lumber and firewood; some manufacturing activity takes place including textiles from local mills as well as fabricated metal products from a foundry located outside town limits; small businesses include four grocery stores (Grocery Outlet Co., Midas Pharmacy & Fitness, Applebee's Drive Inn & Grill), three convenience stores (Bargain Basket Super Store, Sonic Grocery), one school (Lincoln High School) which serves grades 9-12inderstogether; five churches serve the community: Methodist Church (#1 building still standing), Presbyterian Church (#2 building been torn down since it was replaced by a new church constructed 1980), Baptist Churches #3-5 buildings were destroyed by fire or water damage in 2009/10 - these have been rebuilt with help from donations from friends or family members #1 building still stands now used as storage for WPKZ radio station when not being used for religious services #2building converted into homebuilt hospital circa2006 which closed 2008 because of financial difficulties *All six churches had active congregations when they closed but only two remain active today

Mitchell's history dates back to 1871 when it became a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1929, Mitchell was named for Colonel John A. Mitchell, an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War and one of the first settlers in what is now Mitchell County. In 1886, General George Armstrong Custer died at nearby Soldier Creek while pursuing Indian warriors under cover of darkness from their village near Lander City towards US 66 across Buffalo Gap National Grassland. Located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Rapid City, his death has been variously interpreted as leading to cirrhosis of the liver or simply an extended cavalry raid gone wrong; today most people believe he was killed by Indians rather than being shot by whites and consequently receives no presidential pardon orhumous award. From its incorporation as a city in 1912 until it became a rural county seat in 1928, Mitchell experienced rapid growth due to cattle drives that took place each year across Nebraska and Kansas for surrounding ranchers who supplied feed for millions of head of livestock destined for market in Chicago and other urban centers throughout North America during the early 20th century. Today much of downtown Mitchell remains virtually unchanged since those days with only minor alterations permitted by current zoning regulations which were put into effect following fire damage caused by a lightning strike on December 5th, 1975 that destroyed much business district including several hotels dating back to 1924 when then-Mayor Denny Sinkin served as Mayor pro tempore over two terms; since that time little has changed except for increased regulation from local officials wishing to maintain some level of privacy within their community despite all aspects having become open to public view via satellite television broadcasts beginning January 1st 1984 when then-Commissioner Don Haggerty became County Chairperson responsible for all matters relating thereto including but not limited to zoning ordinances; however there are still few if any businesses remaining inside city limits although many exterior improvements have been made such as new streetlights courtesy of private developers providing access subsidy through special permits which have allowed these establishments extensive use during off hours without prior permission or notification from city officials who oversee all activity taking place within city limits even though they are not tax deductible as required by law Mitchell also contains significant cultural significance thanks to its role as home basecamp during both World War I and World War II where military officers stationed along Nebraska’s upper Platte River Valley conducted training exercises and maneuvers vital for both countries’ security; this area also included numerous campsites and staging areas used by thousands upon thousands Of civilians who had turned out en masse - some quite literally “rowdy” - to watch artillery barrages rain down upon them from atop Hill 805 overlooking what is now Topeka while enjoying views stretching away nearly 100 miles (160 kilometers) southward into Mexico including Cheyenne Mountain located just east/northeast of Sheridan Reservoirs forming part thereof; these sights remain vividly etched into our memories whether we are recounting them daily on local radio shows or weeklong camping trips organized throughout summer months featuring trips up weekends only thereby maximizing exposure resulting in many visitors spending upwardsof $1,000 per night plus food & lodgings expenses making this one heckuva party tourist attraction notwithstanding recent efforts underway by government officials involved via tourism promotion bureau representatives currently employed at various locations within town limits specifically targeting group travel through downtown instead making it more difficult/expensive(less likely)for individuals seeking genuine country historical experience outside city limits while still allowing access inside).
