Mitchell, South Dakota is a small town located in the east-central part of the United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Mitchell is home to two gun stores that have been in business for over seventy years. One store is called Gunsmiths and the other is called Mitchell’s Firearms. Gunsmiths has been open since 1941 and Mitchell’s Firearms opened in 1952. The first guns that were sold in Mitchell were pistols. In 1911, a man by the name of Dorman bought a shotgun from an old pioneer woman named Mrs. Kappler and started selling pistols and shotguns here in Mitchell. At first, it was just Dorman and himself who sold firearms here, but eventually other men got involved as well. By 1925, there were threeGunsmiths locations operating in town: one on Main Street near the post office; one on Second Street behind the grocery store; and one on Third Street between McCann’s barbershop and hardware store (later known as Schmidt’s Hardware). In 1951, when Mitchell became an incorporated town, Gunsmiths decided to close their doors for good and opened up shop at what is now known as Mitchell's Firearms located on North Side Drive (now First Avenue). A few years later they moved to what would become their current location which overlook's downtown from an alley off of North Side Drive (currently Fourth Avenue). The building has been around since 1952! Today, both Gunsmiths & Mitchell's Firearms continue to serve customers with quality firearms products until late into night or early into morning! They offer knowledgeable employees who are always willing to help answer any questions you may have about handguns or shotguns!

In 1905, the United States Post Office was established in Mitchell, and the town gradually became more developed. In 1939, the town incorporated as a city. By 1994, Mitchell had a population of over 4500 people.
