The town was founded in 1868 by General George Armstrong Custer and his wife Cornelia Mapes Custer. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant's younger brother-in-law, Amos Nance Mitchell (1793–1876). The first post office opened in 1870. Mitchell had its own school system until 1907 when it merged with the neighboring towns of Kearney and Newton to form the new Kearney-Newton School District. A branch of the Union Pacific Railroad reached Mitchell in 1886 and made it a stop on their main line; this helped make Mitchell an important center for agricultural production during the late 19th century and early 20th century. During World War II, Mitchell was one of several Omaha communities that were bombed by Japanese forces as part of Operation Primeval which targeted American military targets in Southeast Asia. Some buildings still stand from that time including the Shell gas station which still stands across from Main Street today as well as a few other buildings on North Park Avenue NE that were destroyed or heavily damaged during the bombing campaign such as Roy's Store which stood until recently next to what is now called "Thelocal" restaurant before it was rebuilt using some salvaged materials from childhood home torn down years ago - all these remain evidence of one major piece of local history lost over time: The locally operated grocery store that served many people for years

In 1916, Mitchell became the capital of Pine County after it was moved from Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1922, the state of South Dakota added Mitchell to its list of statutory cities and villages Mitchell developed as an agricultural center due to its location near the Sioux Falls metropolitan area and its access to the Missouri River for irrigation purposes. As an agricultural center, it produced corn (the most common crop), wheat (a mainstay of local cuisine), hay, beans and other vegetables; dairy products such as cheese and cream; cattle; lumber; potatoes; lead ore; coal mine tailings;and milling flour
Mitchell was founded in 1881 by the brothers Emmett and Charles Mitchell. The town was named for General George A. Mitchell, who had led U.S. forces during the American Civil War.
