Mitchell, South Dakota is a town in Dodge County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The town was named for John Mitchell, an entrepreneur who founded the first post office in Mitchell in 1876. The first settler in Mitchell was James Ladd and his family on what is now the east side of Main Street. On July 3rd, 1870, Ladd purchased land from David Dalrymple for $120. A year later he married Sarah Hemenway and set out to build a home. In 1872 they had their first child and named him George Washington Mitchell after President Ulysses S. Grant's father-in-law. In 1874 the family moved to the west side of Main Street where they built a log cabin known as "The Gables". They soon added another cabin to the property and began naming it "Cabin No. 2" which stands today on what is now Fourth Avenue North.family operated a general store called "Hearty Hearts" until 1898 when they sold it to J F Kincaid who renamed it "Kincaid's General Store". In 1906 Captain Elisha Haggerty bought Kincaid's General Store and continued operation until his death in 1949 In 1912 Captain Haggerty donated land on 4th Avenue North near State Highway 10B (now US 27) to become what is now known as Park Hill Cemetery On October 15th 1916 Captain Elisha Haggerty donated 12 acres of land across from Park Hill Cemetery on 4th Avenue North which became Mitchell High School In 1946 First Methodist Church organized with Reverends C B King & W D Stephenson officiating John A Goudreau opened his millinery shop in 1917 which became known as Goudreau's Department Store Goudreau also started up a gas station near Stroudsburg Road south of town that served local merchants until its closure in 1956 In 1938 Sioux Land Company established an oil well off County Road 653 about six miles north of town northwest of present day Mitchell
