The town site was chosen because there was a good stream near by and because its location would enable traders to travel easily from Canada to Sioux City, Iowa for trading goods with Indians. In 1868, Englishman John Fenton bought land here and named it after himself, Mitchell Territory being one of his grants from President Andrew Johnson. In 1886, when the Sioux National Forest was created within Pierre County, Mitchell became one of its charter townships. It has since been renamed several times: most recently Mitchell in 2000; however, this name remains official until changed by decree of the South Dakota Legislature (see below). The original population of 2,851 residents as reported at the 2010 census included all those living on or around Pine Ridge Indian Reservation which makes up only 3% of present-dayMitchell's populated area; while that number may have increased slightly since then due to births and departures among Native Americans living on or near campus (especially during summer months), it still represents an majority share of 1st generation residents who were born here or raised here through their youth years – an important component of cultural identity for these people who are often considered " natives." Prior to white settlement in what is now Mitchell Township/community began in 1868 when Englishman John Fenton granted land including what is now Mitchelton Township - henceforth known asMitchell - he called it Groveland Manor after his home country Groveland in Lancashire England where he had married into a wealthy family some time before his arrival in America via shipwreck off Coalinga Island about 36 miles south east coast Of Perth Amboy NJ back on September 14th 1846 . There had been previous reports from early explorers such as Captain James Cook that vast amounts ov wild Bison were roaming free across North America but this information seems either exaggerated or apocryphal as no written records survive even remotely mentioning any such large herds having been encountered anywhere near modern day Mitchelton township post haste although many details about life along American West Coast at that time seem quite similar especially food shortages experienced during Gold Rush days leading up to first contact with Europeans so much so that maps drawn up soon afterwards nearly match those made 10 years earlier by Captain Cook himself despite vastly different surroundings including inclusion o’ numerous rivers & mountains !! However if true then huge sections of what we know today as America wereirgin until very recently due primarily to remaining Unplanted MOUNTAIN LAND stretching across entire Great Plains region!! So vast an area could have easily been claimed by just a few families/individuals & yet somehow not A single footprint has ever been found anywhere closeto today’s Mitchelton township !! This suggests massive areas currently unclaimed by anyone other than Aboriginal nations etc remained totally undeveloped right up until very recent past !! And again raises big questions about why??!)? Many settlers arriving later brought their own cultures with them and quickly formed social organizations essential for subsistence such as football teams (the first recorded game played outside British Columbia took place on December 15th 1873 between two local teams called “Mitch” team from Aberdeen MN& “Pine Ridge” team from Standing Rock Agency ND) schools (1875), Masonic Lodge #7 (1876), Presbyterian Church #4 (1877), Odd Fellows hall #2 opened March 7th 1880 (& eventually became our current Main Street building) churches (First Presbyterian 1888-92 Second Presbyterian 1896-2000 Third Presbyterian 2002-present) businesses like Gennett Coal Mines started up rapidly selling coal direct from mineshafts creating demand for goods also produced like wheat flour Stonewareware pottery & Singer Sewing Machines both established 1865 note Singer Sewing Machine actually patented November 12th 1865 originally entitled “Improvements Over Government Garment Sewing Machines” ) restaurants started up like Joe's Cafe 1908 & continued into 1960s Chinese restaurant called Dragon Fly China 1966 closed down Restoration Hardware store which served food all day long until 1978 also closed down construction equipment dealership which sat on main street next door going back over 100 years

After the war ended, Mitchell experienced significant growth due tothe establishment of several businesses and residential subdivisions dating back to the late 1920s and early 1930s."
