Huron, South Dakota is a small town located in Rush County, Nebraska. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Huron is home to the Nebo School District and one of two high schools in the district. The first settler in Huron was John Withers who arrived in 1868. Withers and his family built a cabin on the east side of town and started farming. In 1876, Withers' son James married Eliza Jensdorf and they moved to their current location on the west side of town. James and Eliza had six children: George (1877-1964), Alice (1879-1961), Charles Hockaday (1881-1945), Edith (1883-1976), Seward Osmond (1885-1965). The last child, Addie Osmond (1901-1978) died in infancy. In 1902, John Cady purchased land from James Withers for $1,000 cash. Cady began building a log cabin which he named "Nebo". He also started farming which he did until his death in 1908. From 1909 to 1912, Neil Swenson served as Mayor of Huron. John Aiken became mayor after John Cady's death in 1912 In 1916, Harry Matson bought land from Neil Swenson for $2,500 cash which he named "Mountain View". Matson also started farming which he continued until his death in 1951 In 1950, Lester Palfrey became mayor after Harry Matson's death In 1952/3 David Kapp became Mayor when Lester Palfrey resigned due to health reasons

In 1990, a group of citizens organized themselves to revive the community and began renovating old buildings and building new ones. Today, Huron is an active community with a variety of businesses including a library, antique store, health club, cafe, bowling alley, golf course and more. Due to its rich history and growing economy, Huron has been selected as one of America's "Most Diverse Cities" by Forbes magazine for three consecutive years starting in 2011. In 2016-17,Huron also won first place in South Dakota's "Community Choice Award" for best government-sponsored marketing campaign ever!
