When Huron, South Dakota was founded in 1865, the town had only one settler. By 1875, when the first school opened in the town, there were twelve residents. The population of Huron exploded in the early 1900s as a result of its location on the Great Sioux War Railroad and its proximity to war-era battle grounds. According to one report from 1915, “The population of Huron has now reached 125 ; it is an important center for agriculture and lumbering; it also supports a large number of agricultural workers and their families.” In 1907, skirmishes between white settlers and Sioux militants occurred just outside of town. After days of gunfire that killed five people and injured dozens more, South Dakota Governor James Buchanan authorized the United States military to come into town and impose order. Rifle companies from Fort Pierre arrived on July 9th and 10th to quell what became known as “the Indian Massacre”. The US military ordered local farmers not to give aid or shelter to any Native Americans who might be living among them; they were instead required to turn over all livestock, tools, food storage materials, horses and other property belonging to the Indians. As a result of this event, many resident Germans decided that they would rather leave their homes in South Dakota than live near hostile natives. In 1908 alone, about seventy-five German families left Huron for western Kansas City (now Wichita), Oklahoma Territory (later Tulsa), or southern California. The departure of these immigrants helped drive down prices for farmland in southcentral South Dakota by creating competition for land with farmers who could no longer rely on subsidies from government officials or investors. During World War II efforts were made by both local authorities (ecclesiastical) and Nazi Germany to expel all American citizens living within range of Japanese forces located along the Pacific Coastlines: those residing east of Kearney County includedannoncered internment camps at Topeka Junction (1939) & Centralia (1945). Of particular interest are records surviving from 1942 includes emergency orders issued by then-Governor James Buchanan ordering10% off grocery coupons for anyone surrendering their citizenship without proper cause; 1st Lt Charles Mangera wrote his disdainful letter home dated November 15th 1941 after refusing an order summoning him before legislative committee investigating Departmental Improper Activities reports stating he knowingly sold gasoline adulterated with lead while stationed at Eppley Airfield near Omaha Nebraska; boxes fullofthesecanned goodswerereturnedtothe storesfollowingtheinvasion...American CitizenswereexpelledfromSouthDakotaduringWorldWarIIin quantities unprecedented in our history books... [They]leftfor pintsized towns like Fargo North Dakota [and] Rapid City [Oklahoma]," reported historian Donatella Jastrow . "The move away from agricultural production brought new competition for resources with industry," according as did increased rates for electricity due largely to wartime shortages caused by Bomb Tests detonating over south central South Dakota .

When the United States acquired what is now South Dakota in 1881, it was part of the Nebraska Territory. The land that would become South Dakota was first settled by Native Americans, who were forced to leave their homes and properties during the Mexican-American War. The Treaty of Fort Laramie had been signed on September 6, 1868, which ended the war and recognized Mexico’s cession of Arizona and New Mexico to the United States. The treaty also provided for new settlements to be established in this area, including Fort Peck (now Rapid City) on the Platte River. On November 10, 1886, President Grover Cleveland designated what is now Huron as a census division of Nebraskan Territory. This act created four districts within Nebraska Territory: Kearney District on the Missouri River; Fremont District on the Black Hills; Omaha District on the Great Sioux Nation; and Huron District on the Muskegon River. On July 1, 1889, South Dakota became a state when Kansas became a state too. In 1907, South Dakota merged with North Dakota to form a single state called North Dakotas
Huron was founded in 1871 by Danish immigrants, and became a town in 1904. It was named for the Huron River, which flows through it. The town had a population of 309 people in 1907.
