After his exploration, Montoya named the area for his home country, Mexico, but no one knows where he got that idea from since he never visited Mexico. In 1872, Major General Stephen Fetterman took command of US forces stationed at Fort Riley Garrison on present day Kansas City, Missouri. He decided to build a military post in what is now south Dakota because he felt that it would be an important route for supplies moving into and out of Nebraska Territory (now North Dakota). In 1875, Fetterman ordered Captain George Armstrong Custer to lead an expedition against Native Americans at Black Hills National Monument. On June 25th, 1876, Custer and his troop arrived at Rosebud Creek about 30 miles northeast of Rapid City with orders not to fire unless attacked by enemies or presenting any signs of surrendering or being hostile towards whites (the event known as Battle @ Rosebud Creek). As they began their march upriver toward Crazy Horse Agency they came under attack from Sitting Bull's band led by Chief Joseph Scowcroft (who also happened to be Custer's uncle). This battle was one of the bloodiest in American history with over 50 dead including both commanders and soldiers on both sides (Custer had been wounded earlier during this battle). Most historians believe that Sitting Bull lost this battle due to cavalry interference rather than true fight between him and mounted troops; however some dispute this finding citing evidence such as eyewitness statements which suggest that Sitting Bull actually retreated before meeting resistance.) Aftermath: Combatants killed: 49 civilians including six children & five women warriors; 5 horses/carts & 3 dogs killed; 6 Indians taken prisoner A total loss for white participants: 12 men killed & 26 prisoners taken

Eventually, these traders got into trouble with other groups and many members of this tribe died from disease or violence at different times throughout history! Some interesting facts about the history of South Dakota include: -In 1854-1855, Crazy Horse led a revolt against United States forces near present-day Rapid City -In 1862-1863, buffalo hunting became a major industry in South Dakota Some interesting things that have happened during this time include: -The US military took over Indian Territory in 1861 after settlers began moving into it -In 1865-1866, white men founded Pine Ridge Agency on land that is now North Dakota -In 1898-1901, Native Americans fought against US troops during what is known as “the Great Sioux War”
Huron was founded in 1871 by C.W. Fenton and others who came from the town of Spearfish, South Dakota. The town grew rapidly due to the abundance of natural resources such as oil and gas, and it became a professional center for mining, agriculture and business. In 1925, Huron merged with neighboring Rapid City to form the city of Rapid City-Huron. The merger created a large economy that helped support rapid growth in the city over the years.
