In 1916, when South Dakota became a state, Huron voted to join that state as well; however, it never materialized because South Dakota's Republican Govt refused to recognize Oklahoma as an official state. In 1948, following South Dakota's admission into the Union as a result ofthe civil rights movement spearheaded by Martin Luther King Jr., many African Americans settled in Huron thanks largely to black farmers who were attracted by its fertile soil and good schools. Today there are few black residents withinhurON itself but there are numerous Afro-American businesses and organizations operating throughoutSouth Dakota which has helped contribute significantly towards diversity in this otherwise predominately white community As stated earlier many aspects unique about hurON have been attributed directly or indirectly to its Indian heritage including: - Many citizens are descended from Sioux warriors or their descendants stationed here during 1876-1899 war with whites - Native American legend has long held importance among locals Showdown between Lakota/Sioux & US forces took place at White Tail Ln (now North Black Hills Rd) late 1870s just outside town limits
